As a child, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother who was a folk artist. She would knit, build, crochet, or whatever it took to convey a story or even a bit of humor in her art. I can remember many nights looking through her arts and crafts supplies to build whatever I imagined. That ingenious use of materials is what made me look into graphic design as a way to to convey a message.
Providing, meaning to a mass of unrelated needs, ideas, words and pictures - it is the designer's job to select and fit this material together and make it interesting.
